  • They're both a gallon!
  • The liquid water is heavier. As water freezes into ice, it changes structure in a way that makes it less dense. That's why ice floats and why your can of soda explodes if you leave it in the freezer.
  • A gallon of water. I'm sure someone will wiki the densities and masses of these, but just look at a frozen lake sometime...
  • A gallon of water....A gallon of water weighs just over 8 pounds. Something like 8.3 or 8.4. Water expands by 9% when it freezes. Frozen water (ice) is lighter than water, which is why ice floats in water.
  • Water has a density of 1.00 gram/cubic centimeter. Ice, on the other hand, has a density of 0.931 gram/cubic centimeter. As the volume is equal, and mass = density x volume Water will be heavier.
  • [I think...] If you freeze 1 gallon of water, freezing the water would not change the weight. If you take a fixed volume of water and compared it to the same volume of ice, the ice would be lighter since Ice is not as dense as water.
  • I gallon of water is heavier . Ice is lighter that is why it floats
  • Frozen
  • liquid..water is unique in that it's solid form-ice is less dense than it is as a liquid..that is why ice floats on water.
  • as water expands the volume changes so if you freeza a gallon of water it expands and is now more than a gallo. But if you campared a gallon of water with a gallon of ice they would weigh the SAME
  • 1 gallon of water
  • a gallon of water is heavier than a gallon of frozen water. Ice floats. A gallon is a unit of volume. The same volume of a substance that floats in another is lighter than the substance it is floating in.
  • If you take two gallons of water and freeze one they are equal weight. However the frozen water now has about 9% more volume and is no longer a gallon. So if you remove that extra 9% from the frozen one then the liquid water will be heavier.
  • If you know phrase 'tip of iceberg', you know ice floats on water. Naturally, water is denser than ice. Water of what temperature? Have you checked Anomalous behavior of water.
  • When you freeze water you are change the molecular behaviour of the water. Water molecules are spread further apart from each other, whereas ice the molecules are much closer together and they vibrate more vigorously making ice less dense then water. This would also explain why ice floats in water.
