  • You're not doing anything wrong. The more you play, the stronger your muscles will get, and you'll be able to play for longer without it hurting as much.
  • If you havn't been playing that long your wrist and your finger tips will be very sore for awhile. If you are a seasoned guitar player it may be something wrong with your wrist.
  • Make sure you're holding the neck right, for one thing. If you bend your wrist too much, you're asking for tendonitis. Other then that, you condition yourself over time.
  • Tell me if I'm wrong, but from your comments about barre chords, I assume you're referring to your left hand? The secret to the left hand is to have your thumb behind the neck, have your fingers curve around in the shape of a "C" and then come straight down on the frets, not from the side. Of course, when you do barre chords, your first finger will have to come in from the side, but try to keep the other fingers as vertical as possible. When you are learning barre chords, it will hurt because you have to develop the muscles in your fingers and hands. It could possible hurt for up to a year. When it starts to hurt bad, take a break from playing or practice some easier music. Does your right hand ever hurt? There always is the possibility of something wrong with your hands such as arthritis (happens even to young people) or any of many other ailments. If you're still hurting after six months of daily practicing, you should mention this to your doctor.
  • Well, you didn't say which wrist. I'll assume it's the wrist associated with fingering the neck. Don't press too hard. Maybe try getting a lighter gauge set of strings so you don't have to press so hard to get the sound you want.
