So that they don't catch anything. Germs, bugs, bacteria, colds, their immune systems are weaker. A simply cough for you might be really hard to handle for an elderly person. Also, if they catch something, and get really sick, and someone finds out that they caught it from you, you could get into serious trouble.

It is to protect both parties. I mean what if they have C-diff or something. You dont want to bring that home to your family. Standard percautions are all about protecting both parties involved. Though for someone on C-diff, they would be on isolation
