He would perform hundreds of live disections and experiments especially on (Jewish) twins.
He probably delved into the most people of all time without anasthesia and caused more agony and gross nasty and inhumane pain than any man in living history. He must have killed more people than any and every thing sicko you can think of. This one man revelled in the invasive exploration of his human captives.
Think about it.

Demented and famous are completely different.
But I am definetly going with Countess Ersebat (Elizabeth) Bathory aka The Blood Countess. Victims? Over 600 young women. Infamous for having tortured them in ways varying from slitting their veins open to putting her fingers in their mouths and stretching until their cheeks split. She also was said to have bathed in their blood to preserve her youth.

The most deranged one that comes to mind was the BTK Killer. But, in history there was recently some Russian serial killer. I think he killed and tortured 50 people or something. I don't know his whole story - or even half of it - but I saw a Top Ten Serial Killers program on the history channel and he was #1.

H. H. Holmes. He only confessed to 27 murders but as many a 200 may have been killed. He opened a hotel in which he built special hidden passages. He used the passages to capture and kill guests. He liked to do experiments on his victims even going so far as to start his own abortion procedure. He melted the bodies in lime bathes and furnaces. The final body count was inconclusive since only 9 whole bodies were found.

Let us not forget Edward Gein. May not have killed many but decimated many graves and did very odd things with parts of the females bodys he cut up! Eating pork and beans from a human skull just does not sound so great, but walking around a house in an obscure vest of female body parts is not any better!

There are various contenders for the title of worst serial killer.
Thug Behram of the Indian thugee cult confessed to killing 931 victims by strangulation between 1790 and 1830. However he may not have killed that many. Elizabeth Bathory, a Hungarian aristocrat during early modern times, killed as many as 600 girls. The worst serial killer Dr Harold Shipman of England murdered at least 215 of his patients between 1975 and 1998 although he was only tried for 15.
The thugs as a whole killed two milion people. This is the most people killed by a single man. The term thug for a violent person comes from the thugees.

I can't believe no one has answered Albert Fish. He was a "benevolent looking old man" who killed and ate children. The parents of one his victims recieved a letter from him years later telling them how good she tasted when she ate her as a roast. Ugh.

Hm... well, I have a real interest in Serial Killers and have read a few books on them, but it's hard to compare. Each have killed, some lower than others, and each have had their own methods of killing. Some killers who may have only taken a few lives are still known more than those who've killed hundreds. Take Manson for example. He ordered killings, yet he's remembered as one of the worst Serial Killers ever. If I really had to choose, I'd say Hitler. He may not have been a Serial Killer per se, but ordering the deaths of all those people (as Manson did) should put him in the running for number one.

Bryant - Port Arthur massacre Tasmania. He killed 35, injured many more by shooting at a holiday resort - killing people while they ate, pulling children out of cars , killing them. Reading the account is quite shocking.

Yeah, but then where do you stop? Saddam, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Stalin, Ghengis Khan, the Ceasars? By definition a serial killer should be one man, mano y woman (usually) who has little power except to prey on the truly vulnerable.

Actually, the more appropriate category for Hitler is Mass Murderer: Mass murder (massacre) is the act of murdering a large number of people, typically at the same time, or over a relatively short period of time. Mass murder may be committed by individuals or organizations--wikipedia citation.

He was responsible for millions of deaths yet he killed no-one himself so he is invalid based upon the parameters of the question. I strictly answer this academically. Of course this one nut austrian tyrant is a dirt bag bug it has not been proven that he has killed anyone, hence he is a bad choice for an answer. A.H. wasn't a mass murderer, he was the one who inspired others to do such. Should he not be riding Satan's barbed phalyx? Yes! But I still believe he avtually personally did not commit the atrocities: he merely said do it.
