On a TOTALLY unrelated topic...
.
One of the guys I work with is retired Navy, and he also was on a submarine which refitted out of Holy Loch, Scotland. He was just telling me today that Scottish movie theaters (excuse me..."theatres") used to have an intermission in the middle of ANY movie they used to show, regardless of the length of the movie.
.
Presumably, this was so people could smoke and drink (in the theatre, according to him).
.
I remember movies having intermissions when I was young here in the states...especially LONG movies...to give people a chance to get a snack and hit the restrooms without missing anything. But it's been YEARS since I've seen this. I can't think of the last time a movie has had an actual intermission here in the States. He makes it sound like it's a social event in Scotland.
.
Care to shed some light on this for me?
.
(By the way, this was back in the early 80's for him, when he was in Scotland.)

Wellll :)
I think I'm too young for that, because I've never been to the pictures when there's been an intermission. I do know that the cinema was like a social kind of thing, though. My dad and his brothers and sisters used to go when he was little, and because the films were just played on repeat, they'd stay all day.
