Occasional drinking should not affect anxiety/panic attacks but any more than that it wears your body down and that triggers panic/anxiety attacks. Alcohol is a depressant and it does have effects.

The root of the problem is not alcohol it's the mental/biological state of the drinker.

Alcohol is often used in lieu of medication. It doesn't work in the long run as the next day they have less defense against anxiety than usual.
