for the swimming pool??? a copper coil on the roof and a minimal power consumption pump. Year one the cost was higher but in the long run it was a better system than the electric heater.

We had a wood stove in the kitchen and an oil furnace in the basement. We didn't use the furnace much and spent a lot of time in the kitchen - which is why most old farm houses have huge kitchens -- it was more than just a place to cook, it was a meeting place for warmth.

Ahhh ... the good old days. (sometimes!).

Steam was in the early 1900's, oil and gas were big mid century, then electric, now solar and radiant. wood burning and coal go way back, wood is still big.

We used a combination of an oil heater, a coal furnace, a wood stove, and lots and lots of blankets and quilts.
