  • The same reason you should also turn off your cell phone at the pumps. It lessens the chance for a stray spark to ignite gasoline fumes present as people (including yourself)are filling their cars. Fumes come from spillage on the ground as well as the filler tube you're putting the pump nozzle in.
  • The biggest reason is the alternator. When running, a car's alternator is always generating electricity. While doing this, it is producing a small spark inside where the brushes contact the stator. This tiny spark is al it takes to start a gas fire. For this very reason, even diesel vehicles need to be turned of when near gasoline pumps. I worked for Union Oil briefly and was shown training films about this that would curl your toes.
  • It has to do with not creating a spark with the flammable gas that is in your car. Here is a light explanation of why http://www.azcentral.com/news/columns/articles/0206clay0206.html
  • You don't have to. It's a 'safety' issue that really doesn't come into play unless you take the nozzle out of the vehicle and it's still pumping. I pump my gas with the car still running everytime. People are so paranoid these days...
