To use an odd phrase, same difference. There's no difference between the two, except that there's a bigger mess with shaking.

I prefer my drinks stirred. When you shake a martini, it causes the ice to melt quicker due to increased alcohol/ice contact which can lead to a watered down drink. Also, bits of ice can break off like someone mentioned above and this can take away from the aesthetics of the drink. Grey Goose, slightly dirty, NO vermouth...that's how I like them:)

Bombay gin with only the slightest hint of vermouth, stirred in a stainless pitcher strained into a martini glass chilled to 10F or colder garnished with a green olive stuffed with pimiento. Simply excellent!

Grey Goose, up, dry, slightly dirty, please. You can shake it if you want, just don't break a bunch of ice up into it in the process!

According to the original "Shaken not stirred" guy, James Bond, shaking your drink will result in it being colder, which is preferable for a martini. Purists argue that shaking will "bruise" the gin or vodka, but bruising the liquor doesn't effect the taste. (FYI - bruising of the liquor introduces air which causes a temporary cloudy appearance.)

I like it furiously shaken -- it makes it colder, and I like the crystalline slivers of ice shivering in my Martini Glass.
