  • Actually, they are no longer beyond the reach of powerful microscopes (Look up "scanning tunneling electron microscope" on wikipedia) However, their structure was described long before they were seen because their *bulk* properties could be analyzed and measured. It took many years to come up with an "atomic model" which fairly accurately predicts the properties of atoms, and that was general enough to work with most atoms. At least that's my layman's understanding!
