Handbags and perfume are so subject to personal taste that I avoid them unless I know for a fact that she wants a particular item. With items like those, which she puts on her body, if you guess wrong she might awkwardly feel compelled to wear something she doesn't like, in order to avoid insulting you. The best gifts are the ones that show that you know her and listen to what she says. Maybe a new book from one of her favorite authors? The best gift I ever got was a photo album full of pictures and little comments telling the story of my relationship with my friend who gave me the gift. The last present I gave was a box of assorted items that tied together the things we had talked about: The DVD's for Sports Night, the show Aaron Sorkin did before he produced my friend's favorite all-time show, The West Wing. A CD, Kate Bush's Hounds Of Love, the second half of which is the story of a woman lost at sea and trying not to drown, since drowning was something we discussed often, literally and metaphorically. Some seashells I found in a coral cave beneath Cozumel, since we once had a touching moment where we quoted the lines from the Pink Floyd song Echoes to each other.
