Is Ethanol really a viable alternative fuel? Would widespread adoption of it's use have a negative impact on the cost of foods if they have to compete with fuel for growing space?

This is something that I have recently begun to wonder about. One of the things that environmentalists and animal rights activists complain about is our encroaching on the habitats of various wild animals, especially the ones that are endangered or threatened. Now, imagine how much more of a problem that will be if we have to grow all of our fuel. We will have to put a lot more animal habitat into cultivation in order to do this as well as grow the food we need.

It sounds good in theory, but I do believe there will be a negative impact on the cost of food. I've already heard that the cost of meat is going up because of this. Apparently the increased demand for corn is making it more costly to feed livestock. I'm sure this is just the beginning.
