Why is it called a "pet" peeve? Are our annoyances our pets?

A pet is a favorite,and a pet peeve is a favorite thing to hate.Have you ever heard someone say,"I'm Peeved"? This is why it is that way.:)*

I've never understood why they call them pet peeves either. I don't like anything that pisses me off. I just think whoever came up with the saying was an entirely too optimistic person. If everyone had a realist's point of view than maybe the world would run smoother and not be full of so many idiots.
