I don't know about it being only in America, but it didn't used to be common here. Now it seems people are more accepting of their differences and get out of the relationships sooner, so there's less resentment and it's easier to remain on friendly terms.

I've encountered a couple of Canadians like that.

I've known it happen here (UK). One woman I know used to have Dad 1 and Dad 2 working together to run the bar at her Xmas party.

The thing I don't get is, if that person is now your ex, then they must have done something that was bad enough for the relationship to end, and here they are now back in your life, what changed for that to happen?

I know some people like that here (Australia). I think that a lot of the time, relationships end badly with someone doing something wrong. However, sometimes people just grow apart, and are able to remain friends when their relationship ends. It just depends on what kind of relationship it is, and the people involved.
