Help answer this question below.
1) Lack of consistent governmental controls. Most cruise ships have foreign crews and hygiene is not taken seriously enough.
2) Same reason people get sick on airplanes - a bunch of people within a confined space sharing every waking moment with each other and spreading germs all over the place.
3) Cleaniness costs money. Cruise ships are a for-profit business. So, they do just enough to pass the rudimentary inspections and appear clean to passengers.
Incidentally, people have been getting sick on cruise lines for many years. It just seems like more now because it is more publicized through the media.
because they do not clean their coils and maintain their air conditioning systems and mold and mildew, which can creatae virus's and many other diseases are spread through out their ventilation systems especially if they do not change their filters on time
Not until a few years ago were cruise lines required to submit sickness reports to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta (I don't know to what degree they have to report, but it's not minor amounts just numbers over a certain minimum). the most common is the norovirus which is more of a concern in Schools, hospitals etc..
This is not the reason for getting sick, but it is the reason why it seems that it's SO MANY PEOPLE, which based on the amount of people who actually cruise each year, the percentage of people who get sick is very small
Mostly from over eating, and eating foods that they normally don't eat.The buffet is always open and the temptation is too great.

Not sure where you got your info, but this is totally wrong. The Cruise industry must maintain standards and are constantly being checked by industry watchdogs. Ratings must be maintained or ships are taken out of service until those standards are met.

"Industry watchdogs"? Please provide the information. If they do not have governmental power, what can they do?

While I'm getting the information you requested, why does everything have to have governmental controls??
by sunniebgi on May 22nd, 2007
Without some sort of regulatory powers, how can anything be enforced? Your comment stated that the industry "must maintain standards"...whose standards? Why "must"? Who compels them to do so? That's all I am asking. You stated that I was wrong and I am interested in the information that you based that on.

Please see.. http://www.cruising.org/ and click on the regulatory information. The website is the Cruise Lines International Association. The Vessal Sanitation information will guide you through the informatino and you can also go to http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/default.htm for furth information. Is this what you are looking for??
Ok.. maybe I was wrong.. your answer isn't completely wrong.. but look up the facts before you answer.

Thanks for sending those websites. They are very interesting. It is reassuring to see that there is some sort or semblence of oversight. However, after reading through both websites (specifically the "About Us" sections and the sections on regulations and standards), I actually believe they support my answer. I do appreciate that you have an insight and your point has been made, but at some level, I think we will have to agree to disagree.
