  • Be direct. Preferably in writing. Preferably with a sense of humor. You could even send them one of those money giving envelopes (the long ones meant for bills). You're actually making their lives easier. They don't have to go shopping.
  • You don't. It's widely viewed as incredibly rude to ask for money. It's rude to flat out ask for gifts at all. Accept whatever gifts people wanted to bring you. If it's something you truly will have no need for, take it back to the store where it was purchased and exchange it for something you need. Don't be rude and ungrateful.
