My best friend taught me to ice skate. i had been inline skating for three years, and to me it was extremely similar.

The issue of balance is the common thread. There's a lot that's dissimilar in the "feel" of skating on an ice surface and some things like coming to a stop. As to how I learned? My Dad put skates on my feet, a hockey stick in my hands and pushed. Totally trial and error when I was 3. It's how most Canadians learn.
