The whole problem with democracy is that it requires an educated, intelligent, balanced populace to work. Education takes resources: something we in America seem increasingly reluctant to pay for. Intelligence takes critical thinking, something we don't value much or even disregard as threatening to our religious beliefs. Balance requires tolerating and even entertaining multiple perspectives, which again threatens our religiosity, if not our actual beliefs. The real dream of democracy is to have a population deserving of a decent government. So no, I don't think we're there yet... and I'm concerned we may be moving in the wrong direction on average.

What else would you expect the author of Madame Bovary to say? Something profound? Hardly. :) He wrote about an extremely ordinary flighty woman who fancied herself quite special and wasn't. :)
