Many U.S. public colleges run on a semester system that runs from the week after Labor Day to the middle of December, while starting up again the first week of January and running until the end of April. Many private schools in the U.S. still run on a trimester system, but for public colleges, the semester system is the norm. The actual week a semester commences varies by each individual school.

If you're talking about university level, every school sets its own calendar. Some start the semester in late August, others in early September. Most have their first semester exams just before the Christmas break, but I went to a college where we had them in mid-January. But the good thing is that nearly all American colleges/universities have excellent websites where you can view the academic calendar for that school. If you're talking about a specific school called the "American school" (I know that there are some "American" schools in foreign countries), it is also likely that the school has a website that will either show the calendar or tell you who to contact with questions.

Public schools at the pre-university levels (kindergarten through 12th grade) are typically grouped into local school districts. Often, the terms are consistent between schools within one district, but not necessarily between districts. Some American public schools have experimented with alternative term schedules, including year-round school.
