That's one word that requires some "splaining" these days. :) http://www.answers.com/gender http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender

Gender is a way to classify a word based on to what or whom a word is referring as to create agreement with other words in a sentence. If you're talking about gender as it pertains to sex roles, however, (I get the sense that you are based on the category unless someone moved it here because that's what they thought you were referring to) it's a classification of a person (usually by the person) based on his or her behavioral and/or psychological traits and how it relates to the characteristics of individuals within that particular culture. But I will say that there is no universally agreed upon definition of "gender."

To me, gender is first what nature thinks you are (xx chromosomes are female and xy are male) and next what you think you are. In the think they are category, there may be as many as 5 sexes instead of just two. We've got pretty creative thinkers, so why should we think our thinks-they-are gender would be boringly constrained?

nope.... Sex, yes, but gender, no.

Sex is your biological makeup. Gender is how you portray yourself to society via behaviour and aesthetics; gender is a social expression.
