well as far as Bass is concerned, i like to go with the artist that have been innovative in their style. I would say Charles Mingus fit into this category. Also Larry Graham. Charles Mingus was the first to play bass using 8th and 16th note patterns, and he did this on an upright bass. Larry Graham invented the "pop" on electric bass. he did this while playing in a gospel group, the drummer didn't show up, and he would play the notes and add a rhythmic pop to keep the beat. Also, Geddy Lee of Rush, he actually combined the styles and used them in rock music. For drums, I would go with Keith Moon of the Who. he opened up the fills and did lots more than keep the beat, he made the drums a part of the band.

Photek, source direct, J-majik. These artists use heavy rolling beats and don't do anything cheesy. Dilinja makes a clean beat with a jumping sound. Dj Krust makes a dirty beat, repetative and great for mixing...these are my favorite old school artists.
