Is it possible in gmail to restrict the display of emails in the inbox to the subject only, and exclude the first few words of the message which immediately follow?

pretty sure it's under the settings, yeah. I can't remember exactly what it's under, but something about preview, maybe, and being just like google search results in showing you the first few words.

Click on the 'settings' on the Gmail and keep on checking the fecilities you want and unchecking those you don't want. After some experimentation you should be be able to get it just right as per your preferences. I have set my Gmail account to show only the senders name and subject. I think this setting should suit you fine.
