Good question. +3, I've always thought that we create our own 'Hell' Make the punishment fit the crime so to speak.

I don't know what faith you profess if any, which ever way I will tell you my thoughts on your question. . I will use common language to make it understandable. I am a faithful Roman Catholic, I don't believe hell exists as you picture it. It is more like your second thought but not "isolation" and never for all eternity. . Heaven represents an ethereal peace and eternal light beside our Lord Jesus Christ. Hell represents darkness away from eternal light. Once Judgment day comes, the living and the dead will rise in non corrupt bodies though they may have died ages ago we will be judged but we will have the opportunity to redeem ourselves by repenting from our past misdoings and wrongful deeds. . So you see we will all be saved no one will suffer eternal punishment as it is not God's will to punish his children. Try to live your life to the best of your knowledge, believe in God no matter how you conceive him to be, one religion or another does not make any difference the difference is how you live and by what moral rules you abide. You can be a good or a bad atheist, if you are a good atheist you will be kind to others, help the needy and care for the animals. . I am not trying to convert you or shove my religion down your throat. I am only explaining myself to the best of my knowledge. . Best regards.

Hell IF it exists would be spending it worshiping some sycophantic god and associating with his followers who thought that type of obsequious behavior was heaven.
-
Well, it's possible that the end is just ... death ... if you are not saved.

many people would love that idea. give them a few books.
