Don't forget all the money the T.V. stations make on advertizing during it!

Yes. But not to as great of a degree as they used to be. Now they're a sham promoting a bunch of overrated, ridiculous, pseudo-intellectual "Alternative" films. They seem to be no closer to the ideals of good film-making, it used to be that they were absolutely a sham in exactly the way you said they were. But now they're also about boosting the ego of the consumers, by allowing them to watch some movie that seems "Artsie" and like an "Underdog" win, and allowign them to feel smart by telling them to support these films because they "Deal With Issues". Which I find to be just as infuriating, if not moreso, than the promotion of bad mainstream actors and movies.

Yes, I do think this. I also think it is so silly how seriously the actors take the Oscars, like winning one actually validates who they are not only as an actor but as a person as well. Last year, one of my favorite actors won an Oscar which actually rendered him unlikable because his ego became SO OVER INFLATED! Now he even thinks he is a rock star: But I just think he's a jerk!

Yes. Awards ceremonies of any kind generally are.
