Selassie was placed under arrest on September 12, 1974 after a military coup. A year later, on August 28, 1975, the state media reported that the deposed emperor died in prison on August 27, 1975, following complications from a prostate operation. His doctors denied that any complications had occurred and rejected the government version of his death. It is widely believed by historians that he was suffocated in his sleep, and his remains buried beneath the president's personal office. (On November 5, 2000, the late Emperor was given an Imperial funeral by the Ethiopian Orthodox church, but the new post-communist Ethiopian government refused to give it the status of a state funeral.)

Haile Selassie never died from complications due to any illness or conditions. He was murdered. The suffocating story is true.

In August 1975, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie died under questionable circumstances under house arrest. http://history.sandiego.edu/GEN/text/selassie.html The cause of death was probably related to the effects of a prostate operation Haile Selassie underwent two months before his death. http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/bday/0723.html Officially, his death at age 83 was due to complications from a prostate condition. His loyalists contend that he was assassinated. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D05E3DF1239F935A35752C1A9669C8B63&scp=2&sq=Haile+Selassie&st=nyt

Haile Selassie was murdered by his bodyguard who, by the way, was also related to him. The bodyguard was bought off by the government who overthrew the emperor. His body was never seen!!
