On an elliptical machine you want to go for variety to use more and different muscle groups. The more you use the arm bars the more upper body workout you'll get, but many elliptical machines don't even have arm bars. Vary the pace, go forwards or back, and switch from arms to legs to keep the workout interesting.

I push and pull them the entire time...it's also good exercise for your arms

My hubby is a trainer and says only push and pull if you want to go faster. Otherwise just go with the flow not much effort in doing it kind of moves on its own. Oh,the by the way I see you are from VA. I had met a good friend in VA when I lived there and really ,it is a beautiful place to live. I lived in Dublin VA.
