I don't know but it's much better than having to watch them chew AND spit tobacco. That make me want to barf!!! +6

I don't know maybe an oral fixation. They all seem to be doing something with their mouths, whether it is chewing gum, tobacco, spitting sunflower seeds or just plain spitting.

It gives them something else to do, besides scratching their nuts. LOL :)
