They need to know how to run the card. You can use debit cards like a credit card.

That's an answer you need to know more than the cashier. Do you want the money taken straight out of your account? Or do you want this on credit so that you can pay at the end of the month? The cashier has a different procedure for both.

Around here they don't ask. They can tell which it is from the card itself. I think they just ask as a way to break the silence.

So they know which button to push. If they push the wrong button then it will cause the process to be denied and you'll have to start over.

If it's a debit it requires a password to be entered. I run everything as a credit card..it's better for me and it still works the same

The clearing process and fees charged (to the banks, not to the cardholder) are different for debit and credit transactions.
