  • No. If it did, the glass and metal would melt right off. The reason the goo inside the lava lamp floats is because there's a special heat bulb in it, and since heat rises, that's what makes the goo float around inside.
  • No. It contains wax and oil. When you switch it on the lamp at the bottom of the lamp heats up the wax. When the wax heats up it liquifies, expands and becomes less dense than the oil so it floats to the top. By the time it reaches the surface of the oil it has cooled down a bit so it's not less dense than the oil anymore and therefore sinks to the bottom, gets heated up again.... so the cycle goes until the lamp is switched off.
