  • If he has had his vocal chords removed; it may be that he knows he can't or if he tried to shortly after the surgery, it may have hurt thus he just stopped trying. Otherwise, some dogs just don't bark or do very rarely. We had one like that years ago; she just never felt the need to do so except for once that I can remember. We had went out of town to visit some friends and took her with us. She was nervous with the unfamiliar surroundings and there was a crowd of strange people there. One of them startled her accidentally by reaching to pet her and to our surprise, she backed up and barked.
  • How old is your buddy? If he's more than a puppy, he was probably traumatized every time he made a noise. Someone has probably abused your little fellow and he doesn't know it's ok to bark now. We had an English Cocker Spaniel, Sassy, who was traumatized when she found herself under a very large veranda in the back yard, and she couldn't find her way out. I had to somehow get her out and when she finally emerged, she bite me really hard. She'd never ever showed any anger at all. It took a year of loving her and helping her to feel safe again before she finally came around. Most people told us to put her down because they would never spend that kind of time on just a pet. Well anyway. If you can find out his background and find the source of his trauma, I'm sure he'll be perfectly fine. Just lots of love & patients. Oh, by the way, our little Sassy was blind, as was her sister who we also had.
  • Have you had him checked out by a vet?
