The primary reason is always money. It could be money to finance drugs, but not always. Lots of prostitutes don't like their job but then again, lots of non-prostitutes don't like their job either. Besides, when faced with a different job that earns them 1/4 of the money, many won't take it.

They are lazy and drug addicts. Its easier for them to lay on their backs, rather to find an honest job. Most are drug addicts and sometimes swap their body for a fix.

Destitution more than anything else. Some young ones who work in higher-class niches are looking for good money with which to pay the dues to invest in themselves. It would take a long time to gather enough to stay in higher education another year or two if working a typical unskilled or semiskilled job. Once in the business, however, many take on spending habits that are common to the trade and end up stuck.

because they need/want the money. .. why do people need money? bills? drug habit? have to support a child? forced out into street? paying their way through school? can't find a steady job? the things that cause people to need money are among the things that cause prostitutes to be prostitutes. they may or may not mind the trade off. because they can't get out of it. ..abusive pimps and sexual slavery are realities in some parts of the world, including usa. their lives and/or their families may be threatened. because they enjoy it, or really don't mind it. ..but i wouldnt count on it. also note that there are different types, like smuggled sexual slaves, girls who have pimps, girls who don't, "closet whores" for favors, gifts, or money, "cam girls," girls who have been brought up into the lifestyle, girls who were forced into the lifestyle, etc etc.. its like asking why does a teacher become a teacher, or why does a cashier become a cashier.. there are lots of different reasons...
