Dean Ray Koontz (born July 9, 1945) is an American author best known for his novels which could be described broadly as suspense thrillers. He also frequently incorporates elements of horror, science fiction, mystery, and satire. Several of his books have appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Nominally a suspense writer, Dean Koontz tends to feature a dog or other animal which often have super powers of communication with the novel's protagonist. He also writes about each scene with vivid descriptions that mention the sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. Koontz writes the quintessential "Beach Book."
