Yes they make good pets for inexperienced owners. They dont require a lot of space, they eat a diet of crickets and mealworms, they need heat but can use heat rocks unlike iguanas and they do not need as much UV or as concentrated as other reptiles. They have dry skin which means less chance of infection, they stay small, they are usually very docile, and they use sand which is an easy substrate to work with. Just talk to the person at the pet shop (I recommend you go to a reptile shop and not just an ordinary pet store) and get all the info you might need.

First and foremost, be certain your family can provide a "lifetime" of care, but yes they are nice pets. These lizards have spines on them which could bother a small child. Someone needs to cut up fresh food for it everyday(kale, collard greens, and store-bought dandelions greens). They also need to eat live food. More importantly be sure you like them! Because like all pets children tire of them...
