I feel a mixed emotion. Though I'm sorry I no longer can peer into the daily paper to catch up with my 2nd and 3rd best friends of my childhood, I appreciate how Watterson ended the series when he felt he was creatively exhausted. The material was constantly top rate and his final panel touched just the right note for me. Watterson's wisdom prevented the inevitable soul-sucking that the corporate world does to everything creative; the strip never suffered from the endless cliches that befell every other classic comic that nobody wanted to see end, and no one puts Hobbes on a blimp for MetLife.
