  • Science defies religion because faith is illogical.
  • Although it was erroneous, I wouldn't say that the church's adherence to geocentrism during Galileo's time was ridiculous, because they didn't have the astronomical knowledge then that we do now. However, if the RC church still adheres to geocentrism, then I think that's ridiculous. What I find ridiculous, is that they placed Galileo under house arrest for advocating heliocentrism.
  • It is a question of perceptions of the times we live in. Galileo challenged established beliefs of his time. He was considered mad to have ideas diametrically opposite to the belifs of the time. As centuries passed Galileo's ideas were found pathbreaking ones. Now we respect him for that. What matters is that humanity as a whole has shown the willingness to accept concepts as proof of ideas thought eccentric once emerged through further scientific research. This is how progress is made. Ridiculous though it may seem, I can't find fault with Pope Urban VIII. Many of our current understandings of physics too are bound to get modified or even turned upside down in the coming centuries. This is how we evolve.

  • Most of the things the church stands for are ridiculous.
  • I guess hindsight is 20-20, even behind the lens of a telescope. Then again, I think the church reigned with closed eyes for a very long time. . . Ignorance is bliss?
  • Have they realised yet that the earth is not flat? We do not need to see the Hubble images to realise how ridiculous geocentrism is... How long before they realise that their hats are a fashion no-go area in the new millenium??
  • Ah, Umma Gumma - one of my all time faves... Did you watch "400 years of the Telescope"? Or did you see the segment of CBS SUnday morning? I missed the CBS segment, but we did have 400 Years on the dvr and watched it Sunday night. It was awesome.
