I have kitten and she often chases tiny insects and uses her paws to shove them in her mouth. Thats her in the picture!

To cats field of vision, they may see a fleeting speck of dust or something and be swatting at it, or they may be chasing a floater across their eyeball.

No, they're just having fun. They like to amuse themselves quite a bit!

Yes, but I generally assume it is just something I can't see. Then again, maybe he is just attacking the air... I am sure there are plenty of things that I do that he doesn't understand, though. Reading seems to particularly confuse him.

Cats are funny: they see dead people. The undead are always trying to play with them, in a vain effort to recapture some of their own materiality... of course, the undead don't realize they're dead in most cases -- and they're frustrated by their inability to cause effects in the material world with one exception: cats respond. Be glad for cats. If you die before your time, they'll be your only company.
