they are not as rare as we are led to beleive, and those I know who relish them are some of the lowest Ive ever known, and Ive known alot of people

They are way over-rated. Think of all the diamond stores out there. Each on has a large stock of diamonds. There are literally hundreds of millions of diamonds out there. DeBeers, has for the most part a monopoly on them and advertising would make you believe that you have to have a diamond to cement your marriage. They would be much better used in industry for cutting and polishing etc.

Diamonds to me are the essence of human frivolity. An imagined, inflated price is put on an object and it is painted as being desirable and necessary if you want to prove your love to someone. It's akin to kids getting killed because they are wearing the wrong color or they looked at someone the wrong way. Imaginary lives that have been lauched into reality. It's a shame. I vaguely remember reading a question here on AB about someone who was upset because her fiance was getting her a smaller diamond than she wanted. The friggin' thing already cost $15,000.

Since they are my birthstone, what can I say. Yes, most women buy into the birthstone, engagement, love thing. I you can afford it, where is the harm. When my husband asked me to marry him, he gave me a choice. House or ring. I decided on the house and said, I'd wait on the ring. I waited 38 years and was given a beautiful ring. By the time I got it, we had gotten everything we wanted.

Grossly overrated!There are newer fancy cuts now that make alot of the older ones not worth much unless they are extremely good ones,and those cost way too much.Fake ones cost less and no one can tell the difference if they are good fakes!...We should be good and STOP WITH ALL THE DIAMOND CRAP!!
