No, it is a fairly simple job you can do it yourself. But remember the old adage: "It is a fool who has himself for a lawyer". It applies equally to agents.
-
Authors who are not masters of marketing their writings and not having excellent contacts in the publishing business would certainly be better off having an agent rather than going it alone.
-
It is impossible to get a book published without an agent. Publishers will not give you the time of day unless you already have published something successful. Not only that but a good agent is hard to find. There are many, many more authors than there are agents and the agents can pick and choose who they will represent.

Not At All. If You Do Want To Publish On Your Own, There Is A Series Of Books Available On Amazon Including 'Poet's Market,' 'Novel And Short Story Writer's Market,' & 'Writer's Market,' ~$20 Each. These Books Are Published Yearly, Each Listing Thousands Of Publishers, Presses, And Contests Which Will Publish You. There Is A Detailed Entry For Each Publisher: What They Want, How To Submit, Reward(Payment), Advice Directly From Their Editors, etc. This Is By Far The Easiest Way To Be Your Own Agent. I Own 'Poet's Market' And I Must Say That Its A Pretty Foolproof Way To Get Published- If They Like Your Work, That Is. I Must Admit Though That There Is No Money In Poetry. Most Poetry Publisher's Dont Pay. Those That Do Pay Give Out No More Than $10 Per Poem, But Even That's Rare. That's My Experience- With Poetry, Not Books. Good Luck.

No. You can be your own agent, but it's very hard to get published without one. The only alternative is to publish the book yourself through self-publishing by paying a fee to someone (like trafford.com).
