Of course. That's all we were interested in when I was in middle school, that's all I hear my little brother and sister talk about, and the middle school girls that I work with also talk a lot about who likes who.

unfortunetly yes. when i waz in middle school i gave up trying to have a decent conversation w/ my peers cuz all they knew waz who likes who and all the nonsence gossip

Middle school, primary school, high school...pretty much EVERY school.

From my middle school perspective, yes. It's the complete norm. Where I am (in England), all the talk is of either . Who likes who . Sport (mainly rugby)

middle school is where most of it takes place because its when your hormones start kicking in and your havnt yet developed a conttrol for it

It is the correct developmental thing to do. Mid-schoolers are just coming out of their cocoons and realizing that they are distinct individuals. One way they explore this is by discussing how they and others interact as individuals. It's about more than popularity.

I dislike the term normal, but I think that is a very common behavior for kids of that age. Very common and if they did not, I would wonder what might be wrong actually. :)

Of course that is the age group when puberty is often taking place and top most thoughts in the young students minds is liking other people for both sexes. As long as it does not affect their studies this is natural and fine
