Before you remove the ignition switch, you might try having a new key made (from the factory key code) and see if that improves the situation. My 1996 Tacoma gave me similar troubles. I tried a new key and it has been working ever since. If the key doesn't fix it, here's the procedure for removing the ignition lock cylinder. Here's the listed procedure at AutoZone.com 1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section. 2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait AT LEAST 90 seconds before beginning the procedure. 3. Remove the steering column covers. 4. Place the key in the ACC position. 5. Push down on the stop pin and remove the cylinder.
