Is it true that the trend of men wearing pants hanging off of their butts, started in the California Prison system where Prisoners in the Yard would hike their pants down as a form of advertisement, offering sexual favors or looking for a partner?

I think that is an urban legend created to shame kids who wear their clothes sagging to stop. I have never heard one ex-convict mention any such thing

I went to an 8-grade grammar school in Beverly Hills, Califonia, finishing in 1950. At that time, boys in the 8th grade wore their pants about as low as they could, similar to what you see today. Of course this was a Catholic school and the boys may have been advertising their availability to the priests...but I sincerely doubt it. It was thought to be "cool". Had no sexual connotations.

It makes them look bad ass when they do it out of prison. To other people, it is so gross.

Yes, it started in the prisons as a code for whos a bitch and who's not. Then after these guys got out of prison the trend flowed through them and into the ghetto. After than alot of teens thought it was "bad ass" to wear their pants like that, so it ended up being very popular in high schools.

NO, that is not true, but nice try anyway. You could have made your case without going that far. That saggy pants started in the innercity--same as hip-hop--but is has no association or connection with homoxesuality whatsoever.

The story I heard is less dark: often the pants issued to prisoners do not fit well, and belts are not offered because they can be used in unpleasant ways. So the pants hang low regularly among the prison population. Then the kids who want street cred imitate the prisoners, so they'll be considered tough. Then the regular kids imitate the tough kids, because they keep nothing more substantial than library paste between their ears :)

Well that was all interesting to read.... now if I tell my 24 yr old where the whole thing started from, he might just pull up his pants quick! and keep them where they should be! :D It gets soooo tempting to pull them way down when he walks by....
