Is it cramp? It sounds weird but you can get cramping in your toes, they tend to stiffen and bend and hurt like hell! If its not cramp I'd get some ice on it to help with the swelling.

try taking some painkillers and anti inflammatory pills, can you perhaps put some kind of bandage on it just to support and protect it?

That happened to me once (on a Thanksgiving of all days). I went home and soaked my foot in really hot water. It took a while, but the pain went away.

Might of fractured it without knowing it, people hurt themselves without knowing it all the time. Or maybe its gout or something. Painkillers, ibuprofen and ice would be the best bet

sudden pain could be indicative of fracture, pinched nerve, sciatica. Not all fractures are evident, not even in x-rays. It takes approximately 6-months for a callous to form on the bone around the site of a fracture if that's what you had. Sciatica has to do with pinched nerves emanating from the lower back. Sometimes you get pain all the way down from the lower back to the toes. Sometimes you only get pain in bits and pieces, and sometimes only on the toes. If you also get pain along the back of your thighs, legs, lower back, and butt then you need to go get an EEG/EMG. It's a test that measures nerve transmissions and muscular function. If you have bumped your toe maybe 1-2 weeks before, then you need to do x-ray, cat-scan, or mri. & please repeat x-ray in 6 months to really rule out fracture/bone injury.

Could be an in-grown toenail.
