  • More than fluff, but less than some people make out. The conductor serves as a focal point, so that the orchestra keeps proper time. He also sets the 'tone', giving each instrument its proper emphasis in each piece. Without him, it would be difficult for the orchestra to sound good, let alone inspire listeners, without him.
  • The conducter is very important, even if the exact rituals usually are not. His antics help the audience keep focus on the orchestra, and his rythimetic gestures are watched by the performers in peripheral vision to keep the beat and in sync with each other. If you've ever been to a symphony/orchestra concert and the players did not keep time, then you'd know it sounds like shit.
  • The composer is their to keep the time/rhythm and help the orchestra preform as a whole group rather than individual intruments. He emphasises certain points in the piece (quiet, loud and other things like tempo speeds and suspense moments) The players watch him so they all play together. Without him the dramatic tension wouldn't be as apparant and also in large orchestras I would imagine that it woulod be difficult to play in time as you wouldn't be able to hear the other sections of the orchestra. Thats some of the reasons I can think of. Homer was right.
  • The conductor is the coach of the orchestra. His job is to hold daily rehearsals and train the orchestra not only to play well, but to play together. By the time they get to the performance, the largest part of his job is done and they could probably play well without him. He is primarily keeping time like a metronome during the performance. But having an orchestra without a conductor would be like having a football team without a coach: there would be no one to design the plays, train the players and call the plays during the game.
  • Everyone is on the right track, but The conductor also interprets the music for the musicians. An orchestra must be led to act as one so that the composer's vision and the conductor's interpretations can aommunicate with the listener.
