  • Having a good system administrator who can do things like. - Install required software - Upgrade hardware if needed - Make sure there is appropriate security. - Making sure anti virus software is updated. etc..
  • Server maintenance is not just installing software and hardware as slevin seems to think. It does include those, but that's a tiny portion of keeping a server running. Monitoring network traffic, mirroring drives and back ups, hot swapping drives if needed, monitoring resources usage, adding and removing users and privileges, adding/ removing workstations, configuring WAN's, adding devices like printers to work groups, modifying inter work group permissions, setting up and maintaining the print server (it's within the server),email groups, intranet ( note inTRAnet, not internet) set up and maintenance...and on and on. One box has all of that, that needs watching, adding to, removing from and replacement of parts
  • There is a difference in maintaining the server and maintaining the LAN and/or workgroup. There is also a difference in building a server vs. maintaining it. For maintenance, I would focus on backups, disk usage, available storage, performance issues. To do these things you would want to refer to the event/activity logs, running processes. There are more specific maintenance duties, but they’re more specific to the function of the server. If it were a print server, for instance, you would want to make sure there are not jobs hung in any of the print queues, etc.
  • Sorry I dont want to be horrible but if your asking this question......you should not be using a server.... stick with a home pc its easier to maintain.
  • Keeping it updated, making sure memory isn't being chewed up or the CPU getting maxed out or hard drives getting full, performing necessary upgrades etc.
