I do not think shooting him would be needed. He sees I have a gun I am guessing he isn't going to try his luck. If I had to shoot him to keep from being stabbed I shot him in the knee. I can promise he isn't going to be wanting to do anything but cry and hold that knee.

Yes, but not to kill. If he decides, that's not enough and comes back towards me I would shoot to kill. If he was holding the knife to my partner, children or family I would go straight to shooting to kill. It wouldn't be like he didn't know better. Sometimes the decisions we make in life carry the most severe consequences.
