There were a lot of frustrated women in England during WW2.

A Garden of Eden with happy peasants dancing round the Maypole, hearty squires dispensing food and drink to all, and Robin Hood doing a little philanthropic banditry in the woods. Then the Americans had to come in and spoil it all with their new technology, so we were no longer satisfied with bucolic ignorance.
