My mother always said "Always make sure you have clean underwear each day!" When I once asked her why? she replied "Just imagine if you got run over and you were taken to hospital, what would the doctors think of you, if you had skid marks or stains in your pants?" many years later I worked in the A&E at an Auckland hospital for many years and I have yet to see an area on the patients forms for "State or color of underwear stains?"

She said that to me after I told my guidance counselor at my very small high school in our very small Southern town that I was applying for admission to Harvard. He laughed at me. I was crushed. When I told her about it when I got home that afternoon, she took my face in her hands, locked my eyes into hers, and said what I quoted above. I listened to my Mom. I'll just sign this as a graduate of Harvard, Class of 1985.
