  • The city of Mecca is the most holy city in Islam. (#2 Medina, #3 Jerusalem) It is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and also the birthplace of Islam. The Ka'aba is also in the center of Mecca which to Muslims was built by the Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael. There is no violence or sexual contact allowed in Mecca so Mecca in a way is sacred in that sense.
  • The thing about Makkah is that in the old days after purifying it from idol worship many people passed through of varied religions but only the muslims were allowed in to the sacred areas and this caused many explorers most of whom would westerners to try to get to Mecca even if they had to pretend to be a muslim. This mystic attraction existed with other famous places like Timbuktu and other great places all over the world but the fact that to this day the best way to describe an incredible meeting place of so many from all over is to call that place the Mecca of such and such is a testament to the esteme of Mecca among all the other mysterious and sacred places around the world. I will not comment on the History as others have already answered sufficiently to that degree but now in order to go to city Mecca itself you must simply bear witness that There is NO God other Allah(than the one and only GOD) and that Muhammad is his slave and messenger saws. Do this, take your passport to the Saudi conusulate get the visa for Umra (lesser Hajj) and visit Makkah and Medinat el munawara and see for yourself what is Holy about them.
