Virtual servers is the practice of taking one server with a lot of resources and then running multiple instances of an operating system on it at the same time therefore cutting it up into resource pools that each virtual server can use. The idea being that the cost of ownership is lower due to less hardware and more servers running on one hardware platform. The resources can be set or run as a pool which they can all use. The ability to manage them depends upon the type of virtualisation technology you use.
