Make sure you play the right notes in a certain chord. If you throw in notes that dont belong...it messes up the "vibe"...also make sure your beats are correct. Create something original, with numerous riffs. take it up and down the neck...have it come from the heart. Feel the passion...from the mind, through the heart...into the fingers, through the guitar, and into the air, and through the ears...for everybody to hear. A good solo is a solo where you can hear a thought...or thoughts....take your time...do not rush, listen to yourself when making a solo...its your solo, feel it.

Feeling is as, or more, important as technique. There is little point in shredding as fast as possible or using weird scales etc. just to impress other guitarists if all non-musicians in the audience hears is a noise. Try and treat it as a mini song, with a start, a middle, and an end, and remember that less is more, sometimes.

Honestly, one of the best things you can do is to listen, listen, listen! Listen to guitar players you like, listen to other bands and guitar players, listen to other styles of music, and even listen to solos played on other instruments. Listen to current stuff as well as older and classic rock. Listen to blues, jazz and bluegrass - all three of these genres are noted for great guitar solos. In adition to listening, videos are good so you can see how the solos are laid out on the guitar. Learn to play bits and pieces of your favorite solos you listen to. There is an electronic device you can buy at the music store that will let you slow down a CD OR MP3 without changing the pitch or key so that you have more time to locate the notes. Then put together your own solos using these bits and pieces. After a while, you will have had enough influence that you should be able to fire off your own solos and they will sound good. Another year or so after that, they will sound GREAT!

One very good rule of thumb for a great solo. It should almost be like an alternate melody. If a non-guitarist can sing your solo note for note, you will have done a great thing. :o)
